Project Luena

We believe in progress that lasts—for people and for the planet. Project UNAWEZA builds the future that honors both.

What is Project Luena

Tin, Tungsten, and Tantalum (derived from Tantalite) are often referred to as "3T" and often considered as "conflict minerals" due to historical links with financing armed groups in the DRC . However, beyond this geopolitical context, they are absolutely vital to modern industry.
Project Luena is GDIS' full involvement in the exploration, mining and supplying of these minerals under the banner of it's Mining Cooperative called UNAWEZA. This project aims at providing a clean avenue towards supplying these minerals within established framework of traceability and accountability, thus avoiding the ever user labeling of conflict minerals.
It is important to note that these minerals are the hidden enablers of the digital age, the aerospace industry, and the green energy transition.

Strategic & Rare Minerals

Tin (Sn)

Tin is a soft, malleable, and corrosion-resistant silver-white metal. Its primary value lies in its low melting point and its ability to form strong, conductive bonds with other metals.

Tungsten (W)

Tungsten is a rare metal famed for having the highest melting point of all metals (over 3,400°C) and a density similar to gold . Its name means "heavy stone" in Swedish.

Tantalite (Ta)

Tantalite is the mineral ore containing tantalum. Tantalum is prized for its exceptional ability to resist corrosion and its use in creating very stable and efficient electronic capacitors.

Understanding their importance

These minerals are at the heart of the world technology and transition towards a green economy and as such, they are very vital to various industries.
Tin (Cassiterite)
The "solder" that connects the world; essential for all electronics,

Soldering in circuit boards, tinplate for food packaging, chemicals, lithium-ion batteries

Tungsten (Wolframite)
The "high-temperature champion"; provides unmatched hardness and strength

Cutting tools (carbide), drill bits, mining equipment, EV batteries, semiconductors, aerospace alloys

Tantalum (Tantalite)
The "high-performance capacitor"; master of power storage in tiny spaces

Tantalum capacitors in smartphones, pacemakers, airbags, and advanced semiconductors

How we resolve the supply issue.

Sourcing and Supply Chain

As a player in the fabric of 3T minerals in the DRC, GDIS has gone full out with its Project Luena in guaranteeing a traceable source of supply of the later.

Regulatory Landscape

We have submitted ourselves to various regulatory bodies to ensure that each mineral we bring out fro export is compliant to the letter.

Opportunity

As DRC-based advisory firm, we are perfectly positioned to help international buyers and investors navigate the complexity of regulatory pressure by offering traceability, due diligence, and sourcing services that meet international standards, thus taking the pressure off our partners.

Some facts about Luena,
Haut-Lomami

Haut-Lomami Province is located in the southeastern part of the DRC, with Kamina serving as its capital city . The province covers an impressive 108,204 km² and is home to approximately 2.96 million inhabitants . This makes it a significant yet developing region with substantial untapped potential.

The province benefits from a strategic geographical position, being connected by roads and railways to neighboring provinces including Haut-Katanga, Tanganyika, and Lualaba . This connectivity is crucial for mining operations and regional trade.

The region possesses diverse mineral resources that align with your focus. According to official investment promotion data, Haut-Lomami's valorizable resources include :

- Cassiterite (tin ore)
- Silver
- Manganese
- Wolframite (tungsten ore)
- Diamonds

This mineral wealth explains why major international players are active in the region. For instance, Zijin Mining (through its subsidiary Longjing Environmental Protection) is currently developing a $399 million, 140 MW hydroelectric plant on the Lualaba River to power mining operations, with construction spanning 3.5 years . Significantly, 10% of the electricity produced is destined for local communities —a model that resonates with your community-focused philosophy.

Beyond mining, Haut-Lomami offers additional development opportunities that could complement your operations :

- Agricultural potential: Maize, beans, rice, palm nuts, plantains, groundnuts, and sugarcane
- Livestock and fisheries: Cattle and fish from Bukama along the Congo River and Lake Upemba
- Construction materials: Limestone, rubble, and clay suitable for cement production

The province's vegetation includes dense forest, Miombo woodland, savanna, and marshy prairies , supporting both biodiversity and agricultural activity. Kamina, the provincial capital with approximately 170,000 residents, serves as a hub for trade, transportation, and mining .

However, like many developing mining regions, the area faces infrastructure and security challenges. Reports indicate that certain areas require vigilance, particularly regarding personal security at night . This context underscores the importance of your stated commitment to community health and safety as a foundational principle for responsible operations.
